Ultraceuticals new Ultra A Smoothing Complex is showing fantastic results for clients...learn more

Ultraceuticals new Ultra A Smoothing Complex, launched in April is A high-dose Retinol (Vitamin A) product specifically developed by Ultraceuticals to improve the signs of aging by reducing the appearance of your fine lines and wrinkles; exfoliating your skin and refines your skins texture. It also contains anti-inflammatory ingredients to help calm and sooth dehydrated skin. As with Ultraceuticals products they are results orientated, Cosmeceutical products that must be prescribed by your therapist. They actually do what they claim. Vitamin A, the main ingredient in this new product is a much maligned Vitamin, so here you learn a little about this highly effective, but also highly unstable cosmetic ingredient.

Retinol is one of the most effective ingredients available for the care of skin that shows ageing, especially photoageing or sun damage. With a good course of stabilised and effective retinol, ageing skin can be expected to show significant visible improvements. Retinol is a fat-soluble form of Vitamin A. The more active forms of Vitamin A include Retinoic Acid or Tretinoin (which can only be sold in Australia by prescription), and Retinol which can be sold up to alevel of 1% in unrestricted products. Bio-availability and effectiveness is a matter that must be considered. When applied topically, Retinol converts to Retinaldehyde and then to Retionic Acid, which is the form that acts on the skin. "Poor cousins” (cheap derivatives of Retinol commonly used by Skincare companies) such as Retinyl Palmitate & Retinyl Acetate is further removed from Retinoic Acid and so have significantly less effectiveness than Retinol. By including these "poor cousins” in their range skincare companies can make claims like "contains Vitamin A” as the average person does not know what to look for, either ingredient or percentage wise! One must also be aware that Retinol is very unstable. Retinol will readily change and begin to breakdown (become less effective) when stored incorrectly. Ultraceuticals Vitamin A based products all come in a laminated tube to protect the product from light and air, hence keeping the product stable. Oh and Ultraceuticals products contain Retinol not the cheap, ineffective poor cousins! The new Ultra A Smoothing Complex (RRP $98) has been formulated with high strength Retinol (0.3%) combined with a blend of potent anti-inflammatory actives. It is ideal for anyone experiencing visible signs of ageing who would like their skin to look younger, more radiant and firm. First time users can expect milk exfoliation in the first two weeks, a little redness and some Flaking. This will settle after about 14 days. This is not an allergic reaction, but an indication by your skin that the product is doing what it is supposed to. Begin using it once every 2nd night for one week and then once each evening. Always ensure that you apply a hydrating moisturiser (like Ultra Moist) over the top at least every second night.
